Chennai gets several project announcements in Tamil Nadu budget

A continuous chain of announcements of the latest projects in bridges, stormwater drains and metro rail while assuring to implement the projects announced by the former governments were Chennai's take away in budget 2021.

Despite the State spinning under financial pressure because of the pandemic, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) announcements and dedication to complete the projects at a speedy pace for Chennai have also gained importance as the party successfully won each of the 16 assembly constituencies here.

Palanivel Thiagarajan, Finance Minister, revealed that Singara Chennai, which is DMK's favourable project, has an overall cost of Rs 500 crore.

On the other hand, Rs 2,350 crore for smart city projects and Rs 1,450 crore for the AMRUT scheme were made.

Thiagarajan also told the media that the execution of the integrated stormwater drain projects in the Kosasthalaiyar River would cost Rs 87 crore. This project would decrease flooding in north Chennai areas, particularly Manali, Madhavaram, and Tiruvottiyur.

The bridges department of Chennai Corporation would construct the three flyovers for Rs 335 crore. Metro work from Kodambakkam to Poonamallee would begin by June 2025, while the whole phase-2 range by December 2026.

PTR also announced an underground sewage system worth Rs 2,056 crore for each added region of Chennai like Tiruvottiyur, Ambattur, and parts of Sholinganallur, while an additional 2,371 crore have been allocated for limited overflow of sewage into waterways.
