Coimbatore Airport Expansion Nears Land Acquisition

The land acquisition process for the expansion of Coimbatore International Airport is expected to be completed within two weeks, according to the District Collector. This crucial step marks significant progress in the long-pending airport expansion project, which aims to enhance the airport's capacity and infrastructure to meet the growing air traffic demands of the region.

The expansion project involves acquiring approximately 627 acres of land, which will be used to extend the runway, build additional taxiways, and develop new terminal facilities. The expansion is anticipated to improve the airport?s handling capacity, allowing it to accommodate larger aircraft and increase passenger and cargo throughput. Once completed, Coimbatore Airport will be better equipped to handle the increasing number of flights and passengers, bolstering its role as a key aviation hub in Tamil Nadu.

The land acquisition process had faced several delays due to legal and administrative challenges, including disputes over compensation and land valuation. However, recent efforts by the local administration, in coordination with the Tamil Nadu state government, have helped resolve these issues, paving the way for the final phase of acquisition. The Collector's announcement has brought relief to stakeholders, including the Airports Authority of India (AAI), which is keen to commence the construction phase as soon as the land is handed over.

The expansion of Coimbatore Airport is expected to bring substantial economic benefits to the region by improving connectivity, attracting more business investments, and boosting tourism. It is also seen as a critical infrastructure project that will support the long-term growth of Coimbatore as an industrial and commercial center. The airport?s upgraded facilities will enable it to handle international flights more efficiently, potentially opening up new routes and enhancing the city?s global connectivity.

Once the land acquisition is completed, the project is expected to move forward swiftly, with construction activities likely to begin in the coming months. The timely completion of the expansion will be crucial in ensuring that Coimbatore Airport meets future demand and contributes to the region's overall development.
