Mumbai Airport Extends T1 International Shift Deadline to March-end

The operator of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai has extended until the end of March 2027 the deadline for airlines to shift their international operations from Terminal 1. The decision gives carriers additional time before the redevelopment of the ageing terminal begins and follows discussions between airport management and airline representatives.

Senior executives of Adani Airport Holdings (AAHL), including Director Jeet Adani and Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal, met the Airline Operations Committee on Tuesday. Mumbai International Airport (MIAL) said the management had assured airlines that disruption would be minimised, historical slot allocations would be respected and slots scheduled for the winter season would not be changed.

Airlines had initially been asked to transfer 33 per cent of their international operations to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) by 25 October 2026. The proposed transition was opposed by carriers, after which the Aviation Ministry asked airport authorities to defer the move by several weeks.

Carriers have now been asked to notify the authorities in advance about the slots they require at Terminal 2 or NMIA before the transition takes place. A joint working group will prepare an implementation plan for the redevelopment of Terminal 1 over the next two weeks, while airlines have committed to supporting the work and balancing traffic during the summer schedule.

The summer schedule for 2027 will run from 28 March to 30 October. MIAL has said it will support airlines that choose to move operations to NMIA, and representatives from the airport and airlines will hold a follow-up meeting on 28 October. Until then, each airline’s network and slot teams will continue discussions on operational requirements.
