Residents of Number One Bhandara village in Bongaigaon district have built a bridge and an approach road with public donations, filling a gap left by government agencies and elected representatives for decades. The work, located under the Srijangram Development Block in the Abhayapuri constituency, was completed in nearly two months through collective contributions and the efforts of local volunteers. The self-help project was organised through village meetings that coordinated labour, materials and funds. Residents said the community spent about Rs 0.4 million (mn) on constructing the bridge and Rs 0.3 mn on the connecting road on both sides, making the route fully motorable. The figures reflect a total of about Rs 0.7 mn from public donations. Funds were pooled at the local level and disbursed to meet costs for materials, basic equipment and unskilled labour provided by volunteers. The lack of a proper bridge had long prevented ambulances from reaching the area and made it difficult for schoolchildren to cross, creating safety and access concerns. The route serves as the primary access for students travelling to Manikpur Regional College, Bijni College and eight to 10 schools and colleges in the region, as well as for routine village traffic. After completion, villagers held a public meeting to present expenditure details to the community and to record the work carried out. The meeting was attended by local officials and prominent residents, including LRS Subhash Medhi of the Manikpur Revenue Circle, retired headmaster Darek Ali Mondal and former Zila Parishad member Abdul Matin Ahmed, who reviewed the accounts and the finished work. Villagers reported that they had not sought assistance from any elected representative and noted that no bridge had been built on the route by public representatives since Independence. The initiative has been cited locally as an example of collective action that addressed a long standing infrastructure need through community participation.
