RTR Flyover in Delhi to Reopen for Light Vehicles

The old Rao Tula Ram (RTR) flyover from Delhi airport towards Vasant Vihar will reopen to light vehicles, including cars and two-wheelers, from Tuesday. Heavy vehicles will continue to be diverted, according to a senior Delhi Traffic Police officer. Delhi Public Works Department minister Parvesh Verma is likely to visit the flyover on Monday.

The flyover was closed on October 20 after at least three cracks were detected on its main carriageway. The closure disrupted travel between the Indira Gandhi International Airport, Gurugram and Vasant Vihar, with traffic heading towards Vasant Vihar and Chirag Delhi diverted to the adjoining service road and other alternative routes.

The decision to permit light vehicles followed cube compressive strength tests conducted on Sunday, a PWD official said. The structural consultant was also asked to carry out load testing later that night, and the flyover was scheduled to reopen after the test results were received. Trucks and other heavy vehicles will remain off the structure while further checks continue.

Shuttering work and repairs to the damaged sections were completed by Friday, but the newly laid concrete was still undergoing curing. The infrastructure agency also plans to conduct a structural audit to identify any other weak points. Earlier, traffic police had said restrictions could continue into the beginning of this week because the concrete needed additional time to dry and cure.

The closure caused congestion on National Highway 48, the Dhaula Kuan stretch and roads through the Delhi Cantonment area. In Gurugram, traffic moved slowly along a nearly 6-kilometre section of NH-48 between Rajiv Chowk and Leisure Valley Park, as well as near Atlas Chowk. The old flyover opened in 2009 as part of a Delhi PWD project to ease traffic on the Outer Ring Road. After a parallel elevated flyover opened in 2019, the older structure became a one-way route for traffic travelling from the airport towards IIT-Delhi.
