SMC Commissioner Reviews Traffic Management Measures in Srinagar

Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner and Srinagar Smart City (SSCL) Chief Executive Officer Dr Basharat Qayoom reviewed measures to address traffic congestion, improve road infrastructure and strengthen public transport facilities in the city on Wednesday. The review was conducted during a meeting in Srinagar on October 14.

Qayoom chaired the meeting to assess compliance with directions issued by the Multi-Disciplinary Committee (MDC). He called for coordinated and time-bound action to improve traffic movement and road safety across the city, while asking officials to identify gaps in implementation and assign clear responsibilities to the departments concerned.

The meeting examined congestion points, road and junction improvements, traffic circulation, parking management and coordination among agencies responsible for urban mobility. Officials also assessed measures to improve the use of available infrastructure and address operational challenges affecting the transport network.

Discussions included the strengthening of IT-based parking systems, development of electric vehicle charging stations and establishment of an effective Traffic Control Room. Participants also considered the upgrading of bus stops and other public transport facilities to improve commuter convenience and support more efficient movement through Srinagar.

The review further focused on better use of Intelligent Traffic Management Systems (ITMS), real-time surveillance and the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for traffic monitoring and junction management. Qayoom directed the departments to adopt practical measures and improve the efficiency of the city's transport network. Senior officials from SMC and SSCL, including representatives from engineering, public transport and the ICCC, attended the meeting.
