Chennai Metro to Study Ropeway Feasibility in Ooty

Chennai Metro Asset Management Limited, a joint venture of Chennai Metro Rail Limited and the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, has been entrusted with preparing a detailed feasibility report for a high-altitude ropeway transport system in Udhagamandalam (Ooty).

The initiative aims to strengthen transport infrastructure in high-altitude regions while promoting sustainable mobility in ecologically sensitive and tourism-driven areas. The proposed ropeway system is expected to provide safe, efficient and environmentally friendly transport, improving accessibility and supporting tourism growth in the region.

According to an official release, CMAML has appointed Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, Bengaluru, in partnership with Outdoor Engineers AG, Switzerland, as the consultant for the project. The consultancy contract is valued at around Rs 9.66 million.

The feasibility study will assess the technical, economic and environmental viability of implementing a ropeway system in Ooty. If approved, the project could significantly ease traffic congestion, enhance connectivity and offer an alternative mode of transport suited to the region’s terrain.

The move reflects the state’s broader focus on integrating modern and sustainable transport solutions into hill towns, balancing infrastructure development with environmental preservation and tourism needs.
