- Deepak Kumar Hota, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML
During 2015-16, BEML achieved an all-time high in net sales and improved its bottom line. Deepak Kumar Hota, Chairman & Managing Director, BEML, shares strategies adopted by the company: First, business expansion including initiatives focused on maintenance of equipment supplied to coal companies. Second, product basket expansion and diversification, where the R&D team designed, developed and supplied India´s biggest electrical excavator BE1800E (180 tonne). Third, underground mining equipment; the company is supplying the diesel mine cruiser to CIL. Fourth, diversification into the dredging business and an MoU with DCI for dredgers to strengthen the Make in India initiative. Last year, the indigenisation of BEML´s HMV 8x8 and addition of new products, such as the hull for the T-72 tank and armoured repair and recovery vehicle for Arjun in the defence vertical, helped in organisational growth. In 2016-17, BEML has geared up to supply quantities to coal companies.
´R&D-developed products, like BH205E (205 tonne) and BH150E (150 tonne) electric drive dump trucks, are under trials and will be introduced,´ says Hota. For construction, BEML has developed equipment with BS-III emission norms. And for its Rail and Metro Business Group, the focus is on supplying metro cars and maintaining equipment apart from electric multiple units (EMUs) for suburban transport.
