Collapsed Sion-Dharavi bridge to be reconstructed soon

The collapsed Sion-Dharavi-Mahim bridge in Mumbai will be rebuilt by the the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a cost of Rs 11 crore. The collapsed in 2011. Officials said work will begin after the monsoon. The bridge that is to connect Tulsi Pipe Road to Bandra (E) junction will be tabled during the civic standing committee next week.

Shortlisted contractor will complete the construction in 18 months. Since 2011, reconstruction plans have undergone two design changes before getting the nod in January. After the collapse, the four-lane bridge was converted into a one-way, affecting traffic in the region. The bridge connects traffic from Tulsi Pipe road, Sion, Dharavi to Bandra junction. The repair will be started immediately after the monsoon, said a civic official.

The bridge, built in 1991 by the PWD, crashed after the foundation wall it was resting on collapsed on August 6, 2011. Since then, the traffic is being diverted on a parallel Sion-Mahin bridge. The bridge was handed over to the BMC in 1993.
