Margao corp mulls new waste mgt system

According to media reports, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) is working out modalities to introduce door-to-door collection of garbage in the city in a phased manner.

The civic body is said to have roped in Fomento, the concessionaire of the project, for technical support on the project.

For this project, Fomento would supply supervisory staff and set up a helpline desk to ensure smooth functioning of the system. The enforcement and managerial tasks will be looked after by Fomento. MMC, on the other hand, would provide 20 sanitary workers, three vehicles and three drivers for the task.

The civic body decided to divide the city into five belts for the purpose of door-to-door waste collection. The Comba-Maddel-Mungul belt has been identified for phase-I.

As per the scheme, the first phase of the door-to-door waste collection exercise will not exert any financial pressure on the MMC.

In another development, the civic body started operations at the solid waste management (SWM) plant in Sonsoddo last month and it is reportedly functioning as desired.

While currently the process of aerobic decomposition of the waste is underway at the plant, the compost being formed will be subjected to three levels of segregation using dual trammels by January 17, reports indicate.
