VMC implements several civic infrastructure projects
According to some reports, Varanasi Municipal Corporation (VMC) is implementing several projects like sewerage, water supply, storm water drainage under the central government's JNNURM programme.
The central government assured the civic body that it would give adequate fund for the development and transport management in the city.
Funds would be provided to enable Varanasi to have a modern transport system in keeping with its importance as a heritage city. For the heritage development of Varanasi, the ministry of tourism had also taken up Varanasi under its mega projects scheme for tourism development.
The central government may request Uttar Pradesh government to form a group of experts to prepare a Heritage Development Plan for Varanasi. The plan is likely to be funded from the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) and other sources.
The architectural and heritage division of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) has prepared the Heritage Development Plan for Varanasi. Varanasi Municipal Corporation had also created a heritage cell to look after the heritage needs of the city.
