JSW Steel To Develop Coking Coal Mining Project In Mozambique

JSW Steel will develop a coking coal mining project in Mozambique, the company said in a press release on March 14, 2026. The project is intended to secure a stable long-term supply of coking coal for the company's steelmaking operations and to diversify sources of raw material away from merchant markets. The company indicated that the initiative forms part of a broader resource security strategy and will be coordinated with existing upstream investments.

The Mozambique project will encompass exploration, development and initial production phases and will be subject to regulatory approvals and customary partner agreements in the host jurisdiction. The company intends to engage with local stakeholders and international partners to ensure compliance with environmental and social standards and to align the programme with local development objectives. Operational details, including capital expenditure estimates and production timelines, were not disclosed in the release.

Industry context includes recent contracts reported across related sectors, including orders disclosed for infrastructure and engineering firms. RailTel Corporation secured an order worth Rs 640 million (mn), and a separate work order of Rs 343.9 mn was recorded from South Central Railway. A transmission contract valued at Rs seven billion (bn) was noted for Bajel Projects from MSETCL, while ITCONS E-Solutions secured a contract of Rs 28.1 mn from the Aeronautical Development Agency, underscoring persistent activity in supplier markets.

Market observers said that assured access to coking coal can mitigate feedstock volatility and support operational stability for integrated steel producers during commodity cycles. JSW Steel will be expected to integrate the Mozambique project with its broader capacity and supply chain optimisation plans as information becomes available. Further updates on partners, investment commitments and project milestones are likely to follow as approvals progress.

Producers have scaled back output in response to fuel shortages and logistical challenges affecting domestic fertiliser production and have implemented staggered shutdowns to manage inventories. The disruptions have heightened..
