Haryana's power from waste project commences operation

The Haryana Government has set up a project in Karnal, where compressed natural gas (CNG) will be produced through garbage and other waste, and would further be used to generate electricity. The project was commissioned on January 15, by the Municipal Corporation of Karnal at Rs 1 crore. <p></p> <p> 'We have made use of four reactors and catalyst chemicals,'says <span style="font-weight: bold;">Anil Mehta, Chief Engineer, Karnal Municipal Corporation,</span> elaborating upon the project. 'This is an alternative to conventional burning and benefits the environment as no smoke or harmful gases are produced. In fact, it is bio CNG that can be reused. The complete project takes place in a span of 15 days.'The project will be useful in the management of waste of the local municipal corporation. What's more, with Delhi and Haryana facing tremendous problems because of stubble burning, especially in the winter season, it is expected to curb pollution to some extent - a whopping 10 lakh tonne of crop stubble is burnt every year.</p> <p> 'All types of biodegradable waste can be converted into power with this project,'says Mehta. 'With this, we want to cut down waste and pollution in the area.'The project will produce about 50,000 tonne of CNG and 2 lakh tonne of bio-fertiliser; it will generate 1,000 kg of gas, 2,000 kg of bio-fertiliser and 3,000 units of electricity every day, which will be utilised by the municipal corporation.</p> <p> To share your perspective on current industry happenings, write in at feedback@ConstructionWorld.in</p>
