Nearly a year after the first reactor crossed the milestone, the 1,000 MW second unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP) is likely to attain criticality by June this year. The country's first 1,000 MW pressurised water reactor of the Indo-Russian JV project attained criticality in July last year and commenced electricity generation in October. At present, it is producing over 400 MW. Generation in the first unit is expected to reach its full capacity soon.
