Maharashtra Cabinet Approves 25 Per Cent Land Transfer Fee Exemption

The Maharashtra cabinet has approved a 25 per cent exemption on land transfer fees for renewable energy projects, the state government has announced. The measure applies to transfers of land for project development and is intended to reduce upfront transaction costs for developers. It covers solar, wind, hybrid systems and storage projects and is designed to complement existing fiscal and administrative incentives. The cabinet approved the change as part of a broader push to accelerate clean energy deployment.

The exemption is intended to improve project viability by lowering one element of capital expenditure for new projects and transfers between developers. Developers stand to benefit from simpler cost projections and decreased acquisition expenses when securing sites or completing ownership changes. State authorities have indicated that the policy will make investment decisions more predictable and ease the process of land clearance and registration for eligible projects. The scheme aims to attract both domestic and institutional investors.

Officials said the move will support construction activity and strengthen local supply chains involved in equipment manufacture and site works. Local authorities will be responsible for applying the exemption at the point of land transfer and for updating fee schedules and administrative procedures. The government indicated that eligible projects will be defined in implementing guidelines and that existing regulatory approvals remain applicable. The policy is framed to support both large scale and distributed generation projects.

The measure places Maharashtra among jurisdictions seeking to reduce barriers to renewable deployment and align with state targets for capacity expansion. Analysts and industry representatives have welcomed the clarity on land charges as a positive signal for project developers and financiers. The state will publish further procedural details and timelines through formal notifications to ensure consistent implementation across districts. Officials anticipate the reform will contribute to sustained growth in the renewable sector.

Dealers attributed stronger demand to lower running costs and concerns over the E20 petrol transition. Data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) showed total vehicle retail registrations in August..
