Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation of six ‘Light House Projects (LHPs) via video conference on January 1, 2021. The foundation for these projects was laid in Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Rajkot (Gujarat), Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Ranchi (Jharkhand), Agartala (Tripura) and Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) as part of the Global Housing Technology Challenge (GHTC).About 1,000 houses in each of these cities will be constructed in a year, using six distinct technologies from a basket of 54 technologies that were identified, evaluated and shortlisted through the challenge process under GHTC-India 2019 as proven alternative and innovative technologies. These LHPs will aid in the mass use of these technologies that will help bring speed, sustainability, quality and durability to structures. For instance, the houses in Indore will not have brick and mortar walls; instead, prefabricated sandwich panel system technology will be used. Meanwhile, the houses in Rajkot will be built using French technology and have monolithic concrete construction technology using the tunnel method; the houses will be more capable of withstanding disasters. Precast concrete technology from the US and Finland that enable faster and cheaper construction will be used to build affordable houses in Chennai. In Ranchi, the project would be implemented through 3-D technology from Germany. Steel-frame technology will be used to construct earthquake-resistant houses in Agartala and pre-constructed wall technology from Canada, which does not require plaster and paint, will be used in Lucknow.Other government schemes such as water supply, electricity and LPG connection would also be linked to these projects to provide facilities to the beneficiaries.
