The Indian government is actively pursuing the goal of establishing India as the primary refuelling hub for green hydrogen, ammonia and methanol in the maritime industry. RK Singh, Union Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy, expressed India's commitment to providing these eco-friendly fuels at the most competitive prices. He emphasised that the maritime sector is on the verge of a significant green transformation within the next decade and India aims to position itself as the foremost refuelling destination for environmentally-friendly vessels. He announced that the government intends to initiate pilot projects for storage of green hydrogen and green ammonia facilitating round-the-clock renewable energy. He said using green hydrogen or ammonia storage for continuous renewable energy could result in cost-effective pricing ranging from approximately 4.25 to 5.50 units. Notably, some companies have already developed turbines capable of using green hydrogen and ammonia with a focus now placed on scaling-up these pilot initiatives. He said that for this initiative, the country needs to have its own pilot projects for green shipping.India has the potential to be one of the biggest manufacturers of green hydrogen in the world because of a huge ecosystem of renewable energy. The pace of adding renewable energy in India is the fastest in the world and renewable energy costs the lowest, which will lead to the cheapest cost of producing green hydrogen. India defines its green hydrogen as that produced through renewable energy sources and does not include those manufactured through carbon capture or other technologies.
