Kerala has given the go-ahead to deploy five hydrokinetic turbines in Palakkad. Such projects produce electricity by using kinetic energy of flowing water in contrast to hydropower projects that rely on potential energy of water stored in dams. An MNRE estimate pegs Kerala’s potential in this area at 650 MW. The draft Kerala Small Hydro Policy 2022 envisages increasing small hydropower capacity from 260 MW to 500 MW in eight years.
