From getting ideas to evaluating designs, presenting concepts to clients and tracking projects, artificial intelligence (AI) is helping architects work better and faster.“AI allows architects to spend more time doing what only they can do: think critically, synthesise complexity and design with intent,” says Dikshu C Kukreja, Managing Principal, CP Kukreja Architects. “Every minute reclaimed from repetitive processes can be invested in creativity, contextual understanding, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation – the qualities that define meaningful architecture.”Design explorationOne of AIs most valuable applications is during the early conceptual stage. At CP Kukreja Architects, AI enables teams to rapidly explore multiple massing options, façade studies, material palettes and design narratives in a matter of hours. As a research assistant, AI allows the teams to rapidly synthesise planning regulations, sustainability benchmarks, international precedents, emerging materials and policy frameworks.AI-assisted visualisation has enabled GPM Architects and Planners to rapidly generate and evaluate multiple design possibilities for projects such as Udaipur Airport, the Sabroom Integrated Check Post and Sacheerome in YEIDA, allowing both designers and clients to engage with a broader range of concepts much earlier in the design process. For M3M The Line in Noida, parametric analysis and generative workflows were used to study multiple façade iterations, while for the Punjab National Bank project in Gurugram, computational design helped translate complex digital geometries into a perforated metal façade that could be rationalised for fabrication.Deploying AI at the exploratory stage has helped the ANJ Group with global clients such as EY, AXA and Hitachi Energy to present design options faster while ensuring every project remained tailored to local requirements.With AI, Kukreja points out, “Exercises that traditionally required two or three working days can often be completed within half a day, reducing early-stage exploration time by nearly 80 per cent while allowing us to test a much wider range of possibilities before arriving at informed design decisions.”At Confluence World, storyline for concept development has become nearly 80 per cent faster, visualisation time has become 75-85 per cent faster, presentation preparation has become around 30 per cent faster and specifications and BOQs have become approximately 75 per cent faster. “Overall, AI has improved our creative productivity by nearly 40-50 per cent, while giving teams the ability to explore three to five times more design options within the same project timeline,” says Vineeta Singhania Sharma, Founder Partner & Principal Architect.Tools such as Midjourney, Flux AI, Stable Diffusion, PromeAI and DALL•E help GPM Architects and Planners to quickly test spatial ideas, material directions and architectural expressions during early-stage design. Tools like Runway are also being explored for motion and narrative-based visualisation, particularly for presentations and design storytelling. These AI platforms cost $10-$100 per month.Alongside AI, Mitu Mathur, Director, GPM Architects and Planners, explains, teams use computational design tools such as Rhino and Grasshopper, supported by Python, for algorithmic modelling, scripting, environmental analysis and performance-driven iterations, essentially, “to ensure that AI-assisted explorations remain grounded in spatial logic, technical feasibility and project-specific parameters.”AI outputs require validation, typically against technical standards, constructability, sustainability objectives and client intent, explains Ashok Kularia, Managing Director, ANJ Group.Filtering these outputs through experience, site logic, material behaviour, construction feasibility, budget and the emotional intent of the space can help yield the desired outcomes.Client communicationEvery new client of HPAC, the turnkey construction arm of Hiren Patel Architects + Design, gets an AI-generated film explaining how the firm works, including its Sprint Work Rhythm, a method by which the team splits projects into sprints so that each step can be tracked and measured, narrated in Karan Patel and Hiren Patel’s own cloned voices. “We also capture action points from client meetings, feed these to Claude, by Anthropic, and the client receives an animated recap the next day confirming the seven or eight things we agreed,” explains Karan Patel, Founder and Promoter, HPAC and HPAR. Essentially, an agency animation that costs money and one to two weeks is now produced in-house in a few hours at near-zero marginal cost, and the founders’ voices scale to every client without them being in the room.Sourcing Claude directly from anthropic.com and running it on the Max tier costs roughly $ 200/month per user (about Rs 17,000), and includes Claude Code, the agentic version that builds the tools and pipelines.“We also had Claude build ‘MOD Cinematic Studio,’ a custom direction tool that turns an unbuilt masterplan into a narrated cinematic walkthrough,” continues Patel. “Each dot is a camera waypoint placed on the plan; narration is written per shot and rendered in two cloned voices. Re-editing the story takes hours, not a week-long reshoot.”Preparing project narratives, design reports, client presentations, competition submissions, and visual communication takes CP Kukreja Architects approximately 40-60 per cent less time than conventional workflows. But as Kukreja points out, “The real benefit is not simply faster documentation but giving architects more time to refine ideas rather than formatting them.”Further, AI-assisted rendering and post-production workflows have shortened image production cycles by 50-70 per cent, enabling faster iterations while maintaining consistency across presentations and stakeholder communications.Project monitoringAt HPAC, instead of licensing Primavera or MS Project-class software to track projects, Claude was designated to build a project tracker. Explaining how it works, Patel says, “a site engineer enters only four dates per task, planned start and end, actual start and end.” From that, the tool renders a live Gantt, schedule health, projected variance, exceptions, percent complete, at-risk flags and a planned-versus-actual S-curve, and the client sees a clean daily dashboard without chasing anyone and without any licensing cost. For instance, he points out, “For a certain project, the tool surfaced an at-risk item and a projected schedule variance on day 14 of 362, early enough to act on.”During execution, the AI-enabled BIM tool Autodesk Revit helps the ANJ Group’s teams identify coordination issues and design conflicts before construction begins. On complex projects involving MEP, workspace technology and architecture, Kularia says resolving such issues early has helped reduce material wastage by nearly 15 per cent while improving coordination and overall project delivery.“AI also helps our leadership team stay much closer to what’s happening across projects, through real-time dashboards providing visibility into schedules, procurement, productivity and overall project progress, helping teams make quicker and better-informed decisions, and allowing us to spot trends early and respond before they become bigger challenges,” he adds.Nipping problems early is one of many useful AI deliverables.AI implementation best practicesCheck, check, check: Know where AI should stop and architectural expertise should begin, cautions Vineeta Singhania Sharma, Founder Partner & Principal Architect, Confluence World. “AI can generate ideas quickly but it doesn’t understand context, regulations, constructability or the nuances of good design. So, every output still needs to be evaluated and refined by architects.” Testing AI-generated outputs before making them part of the design is critical because architectural decisions carry social, environmental and technical implications that extend far beyond what an algorithm can evaluate, says Mitu Mathur, Director, GPM Architects and Planners.Invest in hardware: Building a reliable tool, versus a one-off result, takes real iteration and photoreal rendering needs serious computation, so the AI is the brain but you still pair it with proper hardware, says Karan Patel, Founder and Promoter, HPAC and HPAR.Beware of generic outcomes: With AI, there is the growing risk of design homogenisation, cautions Dikshu C Kukreja, Managing Principal, CP Kukreja Architects. “Because AI systems are trained on existing datasets, they can inadvertently reinforce prevailing aesthetic trends, resulting in architecture that may be visually compelling but lacks cultural specificity, local identity, or originality.”Focus on bottomlines: “AI can generate thousands of images but cannot understand organisational culture, employee behaviour, business strategy or the subtle human experiences that define exceptional workplaces,” says Ashok Kularia, Managing Director, ANJ Group. “Technology adoption should improve measurable business outcomes, not simply create impressive visuals.”Collaborator, not replacement: Ensure design teams treat AI as a collaborator rather than a replacement for critical thinking. What creates value, according to Kularia, “is an ecosystem where AI supports design, manufacturing, procurement, and execution under one integrated platform”.Data governance: Data privacy and confidentiality are also important considerations, particularly when working with sensitive client information on Cloud-based AI platforms; therefore, avoid using open platforms and instead opt for secure subscriptions, suggests Singhania Sharma.Build a culture of continuous learning: As digital tools evolve rapidly, architects need to regularly experiment, question results and understand both the strengths and limitations of these technologies, advises Mathur.What does AI cost?Here’s what the architectural practices CW spoke to spend on AI:ANJ Group: AI spends on a mix of enterprise software with built-in AI capabilities (SAP), proprietary workflows and generative AI platforms such as Microsoft Copilot, ChatGPT Enterprise, AI-enabled BIM (Autodesk Revit) and project planning tools, and AI-assisted visualisation platforms (3ds Max and Corona Renderer) vary between ₹ 5 lakh and ₹ 7 lakh per month.MOFA Studio: A combination of AI-assisted tools, plugins and customised workflows across different stages of design exploration for conceptual ideation, visual studies, research support, workflow optimisation and testing multiple design directions at an early stage typically cost $ 80 to $ 120 per month. MOFA Studio has also developed its own scripts, plugins and process-based systems to help adapt AI to the specific needs of architectural design, rather than using it as an off-the-shelf visual generator. These tools have been sourced through a mix of publicly available AI platforms, design software ecosystems, open-source resources and inhouse development.CP Kukreja Architects: ChatGPT by OpenAI, Midjourney, Adobe Firefly and AI-powered capabilities embedded within Autodesk and Adobe’s professional software ecosystem support the firm through different stages of the design process, at licensing costs generally ranging between $ 20 and $ 60 per user per month.Confluence World: For research, concept development and writing, it primarily uses ChatGPT and Claude. For concept visualisation, it uses tools such as Midjourney, Veras and D5 Render AI. It uses Autodesk Forma for early-stage site analysis and planning, Microsoft Copilot for productivity and Gamma for presentations. Most of these tools are subscription-based, with costs typically ranging from $ 20 to $ 50 per user per month, while enterprise solutions such as Autodesk Forma are licensed separately based on organisational requirements.AI in architecture: A practical exampleA recent example of the use of AI in architecture is Fonte d’Amore, where MOFA Studio transformed an unused 600-sq-ft courtyard in a New Delhi home into an immersive spatial experience inspired by the clients’ memories of Rome’s Trevi Fountain. “The process,” Manish Gulati, Founder and Principal Architect, MOFA Studio, explains, “began with AI-generated mood boards that used the Trevi Fountain in a surrealistic Catalan setting as a reference.”Through more than 200 iterations of art and its contexts, the MOFA Studio team explored formal possibilities at a speed and scale that hand sketching alone could not achieve. The outputs served as provocations and starting points, opening unexpected directions.“AI was also used in the project’s spatial context and structural refinement,” explains Gulati. Stone surfaces underwent more than 25 refinements via AI exploration and computational modelling to achieve the ideal aesthetic proportion, a balanced interplay of light and shade and a functional harmony between privacy and visibility. These digital iterations informed 3D-milled formwork, providing the structural logic for the hand-crafted stone elements. In parallel, the sculptures and fountain followed a rigorous ‘phygital’ pipeline, where AI-generated compositions were realised as 3D-printed miniatures, scaled up into life-size clay prototypes and then 3D-scanned back into the digital environment for precision refinement. Finally, “the AI concepts served as formal clues for Delhi-based artisan Shersingh, who interpreted each composition by hand and carved the final resolution into stone,” continues Gulati. “This back-and-forth between algorithm and artisan produced a fluid system where computation proposed and craft resolved.” He reckons that with the aid of AI, the entire project was completed within six months. Without AI and computational technologies, the same process might have needed at least 24 months.Quick BytesWith AI, concept development is up to 80 per cent faster.
