A 500-metre long Nechiphu Tunnel on Balipara-Charduar-Tawang road was laid open which along with the under-construction Sela Tunnel, will provide all-weather connectivity to the strategic Tawang region close to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Arunachal Pradesh. These are part of the 90 infrastructure projects of Border Roads Organisation (BRO), worth Rs.29.41 billion and spread across 11 states and Union Territories (UTs) that were dedicated to the nation by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in Samba district of Jammu and Kashmir.The Rs.7 billion Sela tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh the world’s longest twin-lane tunnel above 13,000 feet will allow faster deployment of weapons and soldiers to forward areas in Tawang. Over 500 BRO workers are involved in construction of Sela tunnel using the latest Austrian tunnelling techniques. BRO will soon set another record with construction of Shinkun La tunnel, the world’s highest tunnel at an altitude of 15,855 feet. In the last two years, BRO has dedicated a record 205 infrastructure projects to the nation at a cost of Rs.51 billion.
