In an initiative that is a first for India, under the leadership of Krishna Reddy, Managing Director, Megha Engineering & Infrastructures (MEIL), Bihar is receiving drinking water from the Ganga floodwater. Under the Gangajal Aapurti Yojana the floodwater from the monsoon months will be stored in huge reservoirs. Under the first phase, an intake well-cum-pump house was built first at Hathidah in Patna. A total of four pump houses have been constructed with three storage reservoirs that have a combined capacity of 29.486 million cu m. Presently, 5 MLD of water is being pumped as per PHED to Rajgir and 135 LPCD (litres per person (capita) per day) is being supplied for the population in Gaya and Bodh Gaya. More than 2,000 people relentlessly worked 24x7 to make Phase-1, a success. What’s more, this project is an architectural feat for a natural reservoir created using the natural landscape without disturbing the local flora and fauna!
