JCB India Sondhi takes the government´s Make in India initiative very seriously. Having invested Rs 2,000 crore in the country, JCB India set up its fourth and fifth plant in 2015 ahead of this campaign. This was also evident in the theme, ´Make in India-Building Infrastructure, Building the Nation´, of construction equipment expo Excon in Bengaluru this year, of which he is the chairman. Sondhi shares more on the company´s plans and achievements.

Key achievements: We recently delivered our 200,000th machine and reached the milestone of 100,000 engines. Over 10,000 machines are now fitted with our advanced telematics technology, Livelink.

JCB also completed sales of 1,000 diesel gensets in 2015.

Make in India initiatives: JCB has five world-class manufacturing facilities and an in-house design centre in India. With the world´s largest backhoe loader factory in Ballabgarh, it has four more facilities in Pune and Jaipur. The Jaipur facility is a zero-discharge, green manufacturing one. Over 400 engineers develop global as well as India-centric products at the Design Centre in Pune; from only one product in 1979, JCB today offers 43 different models in seven product categories. These products, manufactured on the philosophy of ´zero defect´ and being of ´one global quality´, are exported to over 60 countries. JCB has multiple in-house training programmes at its welding school in Jaipur while its 14 operator training centres impart skills on machine operations.

Success behind rolling out of 100,000th JCB ecoMAX engine in its fifth year of production: These engines are the most fuel-efficient, reliable and productive in the Indian market. This is a matter of great pride for us and our team of young men and women to roll out the engine from our Ballabgarh facility. JCB currently manufactures both types of engines: Naturally aspirated and turbo charged. Equipment in India works in extremely arduous applications and with extended duty cycles. We have considered these parameters while designing engines for the Indian market.

Adoption of Internet of Things: JCB adopted the IOT through Livelink, an advanced telematics system. Our machines are fitted with this technology and customers with Livelink-enabled machines get SMS alerts on their mobile phones or smart devices regarding service alerts, operations and security. This gives vital information to the customer in terms of number of hours the machine has been operational, service intervals, fuel levels, malfunctions if any, etc. This will lead to better expense management and timely completion of work. To monitor these machines, we have set up a world-class central command centre at our Ballabgarh facility. Our dealerships have also set up similar Livelink command centres.

Impact of market scenario on the company´s growth: Government initiatives and reforms in the past year have given the industry a positive outlook. We are noticing some movement on the ground in the roads and highways sector. Announced investments in various projects like smart cities, high-speed railway corridors, etc, will hopefully make the demand for construction equipment surge. At JCB, we introduced two new products: The 455ZX Wheeled Loader with Common Rail JCB Dieselmax 672 engine, which has best-in-class productivity and is made for rugged Indian conditions, and the JS220LC Xtra tracked excavator with superior performance with new smart controls and the latest Livelink technology.
