Nagpur Fire Audit Exposes Shocking Lapses

A recent fire safety inspection in Nagpur has uncovered a disturbing reality: nearly 1,850 high-rise and special buildings are missing crucial fire protection measures, putting residents at serious risk. This blatant disregard for safety regulations, specifically section 6 of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Saving Measures Act, has prompted swift action from the authorities.

Over 1,286 buildings have been deemed immediately unsafe and evacuation orders issued to occupants. Fire officials, working tirelessly across nine city fire stations, conducted the comprehensive audit, uncovering the alarming extent of the problem.

The audit also revealed that while 5,595 buildings had obtained basic clearance from the fire department, a significant portion (772) were still under construction, raising concerns about potential safety hazards. Another 903 buildings had managed to secure fire compliance certificates, but the audit's findings cast doubt on the true effectiveness of these certifications.

Determined to prioritize fire safety, the department has taken decisive steps. Water and electricity connections have been cut off to 821 buildings, leveraging collaboration with government departments like OCWL and MSEDCL. This bold move aims to force owners into immediate action to address the glaring deficiencies.

The fire department hasn't stopped there. Criminal cases have been filed against the owners of 122 buildings for violating the Act (section 36), and police have been instructed to take necessary action. Additionally, five cases have already been filed in the district court, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the department's commitment to holding violators accountable.
