Woman on top

Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram may or may not have been playing to the women's gallery ahead of the Parliamentary elections next year, but very few will dispute that he's got the next candidate for the chairmanship of State Bank of India, the country's biggest bank, perfectly right. Arundhati Bhattacharya, Managing Director and CFO, SBI Caps, is the front runner for the post of Chairperson, State Bank of India, when the current incumbent Pratip Chaudhuri retires by the end of this month. Her name will soon be forwarded to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) for consideration. If indeed she gets the position, she will be State Bank of India's first woman chairperson. Bhattacharya has been instrumental in setting up various initiatives of SBI including SBI General Insurance, SBI Macquarie Infrastructure Fund and SBI SG Global Securities Services and has played a very influential' and aggressively pushy role in the funding of key infrastructure projects even reportedly going to the extent of taking on the minders of government. Bhattacharya will be put to test coming as she does at the helm of affairs at a particularly challenging economic time.
