FedEx To Invest USD 150 Million In Delhi Air Cargo Hub

Federal Express Corporation will invest USD 150 million to develop an integrated air cargo hub covering 230,000 square feet at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. The company held a groundbreaking ceremony in the national capital in the presence of the Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, who underlined that India should serve as the backbone for air cargo movements. The project is positioned as a long-term strategic investment by the carrier. The hub is intended to support faster freight handling and international linkages.

The facility will be established at GMR Cargo City and is expected to strengthen connectivity across north and east India by linking regional businesses with global markets, the company said in its release. GMR Cargo City will be developed in phases and construction work was expected to start shortly, according to the statement. The hub is planned to integrate air and ground operations to improve transit times. The design allows for modular expansion as demand grows.

At the current exchange rate the USD 150 million investment translates to about Rs 14,000 million (14,000 mn), or roughly Rs 14 bn, providing a sizable capital commitment to the sector. Defining million as mn for subsequent references, the sum illustrates the scale of foreign direct investment into aviation logistics. Observers noted that such capacity additions could support export-oriented manufacturers and time-sensitive supply chains. Industry sources said the move aligns with broader efforts to enhance cargo infrastructure.

The facility is designed to raise processing capacity from 600 to 5,000 packages per hour, with scope for further scaling as volumes increase. The Civil Aviation Secretary Samir Kumar Sinha said efforts were under way to remove bottlenecks for air cargo movements and authorities would facilitate operational readiness. FedEx was described as a leading express transportation company operating a global air and ground network for shipments. The investment is expected to bolster regional connectivity and provide businesses improved access to international markets.
