Indian Army To Transition 41 Stations To Piped Natural Gas

The Indian Army (IA) organised the PNG Transition Webinar-2026 at the Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt, to accelerate transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) across feasible Army establishments in line with the Government of India’s vision of a gas-based economy. The event convened ministry and regulatory representatives alongside technical and distribution partners to map a practical adoption timetable. Organisers set out objectives to ensure safety, regulatory compliance and structured implementation.

Key stakeholders included the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), the Defence Estates Organisation (DEO), Military Engineer Services (MES) and City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities, which participated in detailed sessions on logistics and coordination. As part of the initiative the IA plans to convert 41 Army Stations to PNG during FY 2026–27, with subsequent expansion to other feasible establishments. The plan and its milestones were described in a press release issued by the Ministry of Defence.

The Indian Army PNG Guide was released at the webinar and serves as a common reference document to facilitate a structured, standardised transition. The guide addresses administrative procedures, technical specifications, safety protocols and implementation requirements to align station-level works with regulatory and policy frameworks. Sessions examined statutory clearances, land and works-related challenges, accounting and reimbursement mechanisms, and practical technical considerations for seamless integration.

Discussions also covered the preparedness of CGD entities and shared station-level implementation experiences to identify replicable approaches and risk mitigations. The IA reaffirmed its commitment to a safe, efficient and sustainable transition to PNG across feasible establishments and outlined a collaborative path with government and distribution partners. The webinar concluded with an emphasis on phased implementation and continuing coordination to monitor progress and address challenges.
