Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde urged cities across BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations to share experience, technology and innovation to build citizen-centric cities for the twenty-first century. He characterised cities not merely as structures of brick and concrete but as the growth engines of a nation’s economic progress and called for a focus on resilience, cooperation and sustainability. The remarks were made during the inaugural session of the BRICS Friendship Cities Conclave 2026 in Mumbai. Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma underlined the growing interdependence of nations and said the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam has become a practical reality in an interconnected world. He urged delegates to ensure the conclave translates proposed ideas and solutions into concrete action and partnerships. The event is convened by Mumbai First, in partnership with the Government of Maharashtra and the Government of India, and has brought together representatives from around 15 cities and several BRICS nations together with policymakers and urban experts. The two-day conclave is being held under the theme of building for resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability and will run focused sessions across climate and environmental resilience, next-generation urban infrastructure and mobility, and inclusive, people-centric development. Delegates will discuss digital, financial and governance innovations that support equitable urban growth. Sessions will examine strategies for climate adaptation, sustainable mobility, affordable housing and inclusive services to ensure cities work for all residents. Organisers said the conclave will foster cooperation, technology sharing and innovation exchange among cities to accelerate urban transformation. The gathering aims to build partnerships that prioritise resilience, sustainability and citizen-centric services while balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship. Participants will include municipal leaders, urban planners, academic experts and private sector representatives who can contribute practical models and scalable solutions.
