Nagpur civic body chases Rs 4+ billion from property tax defaulters

The municipal administration has initiated an extensive recovery drive in the city due to a shortage of funds combined with defaults in property tax payments. It was mentioned that for the ongoing financial year, the NMC had set a target of earning Rs 3 billion in property taxes. By November 20, Rs 1.5 billion had already been added to the corporation exchequer, signifying a Rs 350 million increase compared to the previous financial year until November 21.

In an effort to boost collection, the NMC has commenced attaching properties and conducting public auctions. According to the provisions of section 128 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act and Taxation Rule 47, the NMC possesses the right to seize and impound relevant immovable and movable property within that premise. Subsequently, these properties can be sold through auction to recover the arrears.

Assistant municipal commissioners of all 10 municipal zones have been instructed by Additional Municipal Commissioner Anchal Goyal to recover the arrears. Additionally, all zone assistant commissioners were directed to conclude the proceedings under the property tax recovery warrants issued for 1,356 defaulters and collect the outstanding property tax amount of Rs 250 million by December 5, 2023.
