JSW Utkal Steel Awards Sinter Plant Contract to SMS Group

JSW Utkal Steel has awarded Germany-based SMS Group a contract to supply an advanced sinter plant for its 13.2 mn tonnes per annum (MTPA) integrated steel complex at Paradeep in Odisha. The award marks a major procurement step in the development of the greenfield project.

The first-phase sinter facility will have an annual production capacity of approximately 5.75 MTPA. It will include a sintering strand covering 496 square metres, with the facility designed to support the raw material processing requirements of the wider steel complex.

SMS Group’s scope covers complete design and engineering, equipment supply, electrical systems, and Level 1 and Level 2 automation. The contract therefore encompasses the principal technical and delivery requirements for establishing the sinter plant, from system design through to automation and electrical integration.

The facility will incorporate SMS Group’s Optimus Sinter digital technology and Emission- and Energy-Optimized Sintering (EOS) systems. These technologies are intended to improve plant productivity, recover waste heat, lower emissions, and increase fuel efficiency during the sintering process.

Commissioning of the plant is targeted for May 2028. The contract strengthens JSW Group’s raw material processing infrastructure as it expands steelmaking capacity in Odisha and supports the development of the company’s integrated complex at Paradeep. The financial value of the awarded contract has not been disclosed.

The 13.2 MTPA project is expected to contribute to the expansion of domestic steel capacity and related industrial activity in the state. The sinter plant will form an important part of the project’s initial processing infrastructure, supplying prepared material for subsequent stages of steel production. The award also represents a key milestone in the execution of JSW Utkal Steel’s broader greenfield development programme.
