Berhampur corporation to set up waste plant under PPP

Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BMC) decided to set up a Solid Waste Management Plant (SWMP) in public-private partnership (PPP) mode to process solid wastes generated in the town. The town generates around 200 tonne of solid wastes daily. At present, wastes are being collected from households in 18 out of 37 wards through agencies. In the other 19 wards, the BMC is collecting through street sweeping and community bin service. The civic body appointed International Finance Corporation (IFC), a World Bank group, as transaction advisor to develop the plant. The company is looking out for a contractor for the project and has recently held pre-bid meet with bidders. The prospective contractor would be responsible for setting up an integrated system involving collection, transportation, treatment and disposal with composting technology and closure of site. The civic body acquired 31.62 acre land at Mohada, about 15 km from the town for establishment of the project. Reports suggest that the corporation received interest from seven private companies in the project and of this four firms visited the proposed site and existing dumping yard.
