World's highest rail bridge to be completed by 2017

The Railway bridge under construction over the Chenab River in Jammu & Kashmir will have a height of 359 m from the river bed level. The estimated cost of the bridge is Rs 512.74 crore. It is a part of Katra-Banihal section of the project, targeted to be completed by December 2017.

Railways' freight traffic may increase by 5.2% Indian Railways' revenue-earning freight traffic is projected to increase by 5.2 per cent in 2012-13 with about 1,020 mn tonne of commodities likely to be transported during the year. The freight traffic during April-June 2012 stood at 244.8 mn tonne. This translates into a 4.8 per cent rise as compared to the corresponding period a year ago.
