Allwyn-Miyapur Flyover Project Threatens over 350 Trees

The proposed six-lane bidirectional flyover along the Allwyn-Miyapur X Road corridor in Cyberabad is expected to affect more than 350 mature trees, prompting concern among residents and environmentalists. The Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) is advancing the project to address severe congestion and prepare for projected traffic growth along the expanding information technology corridor.

CMC sources said tree enumeration had been completed in coordination with the Forest Department and the Tree Protection Committee. Documents submitted in August included a signed relocation plan, an agency undertaking letter and a soil suitability certificate, although final clearance for the tree-related work remained pending.

Residents have acknowledged the need to improve movement along a corridor used by more than 500,000 vehicles, but warned that removing its decade-old canopy could increase heat and leave the route exposed. Environmentalists have described the situation as an example of the ecological costs associated with rapid urbanisation, while local shopkeepers and commuters have criticised excavation work that has already begun between trees and disrupted access.

Authorities have started shifting water and sewerage lines, as well as Telangana State Southern Power Distribution Company electric poles, to maintain the project schedule. The flyover and multi-level grade separator are targeted for completion by June 2028 and have been designed to accommodate traffic projections through 2045.

Recent surveys recorded peak-hour volumes of 14,528 Passenger Car Units (PCU) per hour at Allwyn Junction and 13,459 PCU per hour at Miyapur Junction. Officials said the junctions could face severe gridlock within a decade without additional infrastructure, placing pressure on planners to balance environmental preservation with the mobility requirements of a growing urban and commercial region.
