Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu chaired the 70th governing body meeting of the Unified Traffic & Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) on Wednesday, where six Multi Modal Integration (MMI) projects of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) and two road projects of the Public Works Department (PWD), Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi, were approved. The approved MMI plans cover GTB Nagar and Malviya Nagar stations on the Yellow Line, Sarita Vihar on the Violet Line, Akshardham on the Blue Line, Rohini West and Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital on the Red Line, and Shastri Park on the Red Line. The plans apply to an influence zone of approximately 300 metres around mass rapid transit stations and focus on improving access, last-mile connectivity, walkability and pedestrian safety. DMRC had prepared MMI plans for 31 metro stations across Delhi’s Phase 1 and Phase 2 corridors. With approval for the latest six plans, all 31 plans have now received clearance from UTTIPEC. Senior representatives of the Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Government, Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Delhi Traffic Police, PWD, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, Indian Railways, National Capital Region Transport Corporation and other agencies attended the meeting. The meeting also approved a proposed six-lane elevated corridor on Maa Anandmayee Marg between Outer Ring Road and Mehrauli-Badarpur Road. The approximately 5.5-km corridor in South Delhi will include an underpass and roundabout at the Crowne Plaza intersection on Okhla Estate Marg, bypass around 12 intersections and address congestion linked to traffic from the Okhla Phase 1 and Phase 2 industrial areas. A second road project aims to decongest Mukarba Chowk in north-west Delhi. It includes widening the existing road overbridge on Outer Ring Road from six lanes to 10 lanes and constructing a four-lane bridge connecting Jahangirpuri Industrial Area with Sanjay Gandhi Transport Nagar over the Delhi-Sonipat rail line. The new connection is expected to shift an estimated 20 per cent of traffic from Mukarba Chowk and reduce congestion on NH-44.
