Cabinet Minister Ganesh Joshi on Monday laid the foundation stone for an alternative motorable road in Purukul to provide relief to residents affected by the proposed Dehradun–Mussoorie ropeway project. The road, intended to serve the residential area above the ropeway’s lower terminal, has been allocated Rs 13.1 mn in funding. It is designed to facilitate movement during construction and to offer improved connectivity for the locality once completed. The announcement followed a ceremonial event attended by local residents and officials. Joshi said the state government remained attentive to the interests of those affected while pursuing the ropeway scheme, which aims to ease travel between the two cities, reduce traffic congestion and boost tourism. He instructed the Public Works Department (PWD) and the executing agency not to compromise on construction quality and to complete the scheme in a time-bound manner. The alternative route was described as approximately one and a half kilometre long and would be built to high standards to provide early relief to the community. The minister highlighted that the new road will ensure smoother daily movement for residents living above the lower terminal and will support the broader development of the Purukul area. Senior activists Laxman Singh Rawat, Kiran and Anurag Singh were present alongside Rajesh Kumar, executive engineer of the PWD, and large numbers of local inhabitants. Officials emphasised coordination between agencies to minimise inconvenience during construction and to safeguard the interests of the local population. The ropeway project is regarded as a key measure to relieve growing traffic pressure in Mussoorie and to provide tourists with faster and safer transport options. The construction of the alternative road alongside the project is seen as a significant mitigating step that will support tourism and local mobility. The government stated it will continue to strengthen road connectivity and infrastructure across the region.
