GMDA Plans Iffco Chowk Revamp, Examines Sikanderpur Flyover

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) plans to redesign and redevelop Iffco Chowk to reduce congestion along MG Road, while examining the feasibility of a flyover or underpass at Sikanderpur. The proposals followed an inspection of the corridor by GMDA chief executive officer PC Meena on Monday.

Meena directed the authority’s engineering wing to coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) on the comprehensive redevelopment of Iffco Chowk. A traffic expert is also being considered to study traffic patterns, pedestrian movement, junction functionality and the condition of existing utilities.

At Sikanderpur, officials were instructed to assess whether an underpass or elevated corridor would provide a suitable grade-separated solution for improving traffic movement. A traffic consultant will prepare a detailed assessment of current conditions, after which a Detailed Project Report will examine the technical feasibility of the proposed infrastructure.

The authority is also studying the possibility of constructing a Foot Over Bridge along MG Road near the malls to improve pedestrian safety. The mobility division has been asked to identify suitable entry and exit points that can support pedestrian and vehicle movement without adversely affecting traffic flow on the busy corridor.

During the inspection, GMDA officials reviewed the MG Road entry corridor from the Ghitorni side and were directed to improve adjoining roads and green belts. The enforcement wing was asked to remove building material from the area and assess how the available space could be further developed and maintained.

Meena also called for regular enforcement and monitoring to keep footpaths free from encroachments. Representatives of resident welfare associations raised concerns about pedestrian movement, parking, maintenance and other public infrastructure requirements along the bus road. The discussions formed part of the authority’s wider review of mobility and civic conditions in the area.

Reddy made the remarks on Monday on the sidelines of the Assocham-organised Angul Aluminium Roadshow in Kolkata. His comments came amid reports of alleged supply constraints at some power plants, although he said the temporary interruptions should not be interpreted as a broader shortage. ..
