The long neglected roads of Gorakhpur’s southern region are undergoing a major transformation as work proceeds on nine road projects costing Rs 4,450 million (mn; Rs 445 crore) across a 118 km network. The programme comprises road widening, strengthening and construction of new stretches aimed at remodelling connectivity and travel efficiency. The schemes are intended to link key routes to the Gorakhpur–Varanasi four-lane highway and the Link Expressway and reflect the Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s infrastructure priorities. Authorities have directed accelerated work on four-lane connectivity for main corridors while carrying out widening and strengthening in rural areas at a war footing. The southern region, long affected by weak links, is now seeing improved access to markets and services. Pothole ridden carriageways had earlier impeded access to healthcare, education and trade, and the enhanced pavement and wider profiles are changing travel patterns across the district. District Magistrate Deepak Meena said the district had made significant progress on road projects in line with the state leadership’s vision and that all ongoing works were instructed to be completed within stipulated timeframes while maintaining quality standards. As part of the expansion the Chief Minister inaugurated the Dhuriyapar–Uruwa–Shahpur–Belghat widening, a scheme costing Rs 570 million, on June 13. Over the coming month through to March 2027, nine projects covering 118 km and costing more than Rs 4,450 million are scheduled for completion under the current plan. Key stretches include Mahdeva–Dudhra–Sopra, 15.20 km, Rs 355.6 mn, over 85 per cent complete; Gorakhpur–Khajni–Sikriganj, 13.07 km, Rs 605.9 mn, over 95 per cent; Bhiti–Bansgaon–Gola (chainage 25.2 to 41.33), 16.13 km, Rs 810.1 mn, over 65 per cent; Bhiti–Bansgaon–Gola (chainage 0 to 10.4 and 48 to 58), 20.40 km, Rs 952.7 mn, over 29 per cent; and Hata–Dhebra–Dhakwa–Shivpur, eight point two km, Rs 307.1 mn, over 38 per cent. Other works include Kaudiram–Jagdishpur–Dihwa–Harpur Sugar Mill Road, 18 km, Rs 528.7 mn, over 30 per cent; Rikauli–Bankata, nine km, Rs 281.1 mn, over 55 per cent; Mini ITI Hariharpur Road to Tehsil link, seven point eight five km, Rs 251.9 mn, over 18 per cent; and Uruwa–Dudhra–Pipri, 11 km, Rs 362.0 mn, over 56 per cent.
