Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) Minister and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) chairman Krushna Chandra Mahapatra on Friday laid the foundation stone for a major six-lane road project that will link Guru Kelucharan Park with Patia Railway Station. The 45-metre-wide Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) road is intended to strengthen connectivity in the rapidly developing northern parts of the city and to ease congestion along existing corridors. Officials noted the scheme responds to rising commuter demand in the area. The carriageway will extend for 2,387 metres and will pass through Patia, Chandrasekharpur and Gadakana mouzas. The alignment has been planned as part of the Right Side Road Network (RSRN) and is expected to provide an important link to Patia Railway Station while offering an alternative route for commuters who presently use the busy Jaydev Vihar–Nandankanan corridor. The route has been aligned to minimise disruption to established neighbourhoods. The design emphasises traffic flow and multimodal access. The project has been estimated to cost Rs 558.5 million (mn), and it has been scheduled for completion within 18 months. The tender documents envisage modern urban infrastructure including street lighting, footpaths, a dedicated utility corridor and improved drainage facilities. Planners said the provisions will facilitate safer crossings and systematic utility maintenance. These measures are intended to enhance road safety, support pedestrian movement and reduce travel times for both private and public transport users. BDA officials indicated that the development will form part of a wider plan to decongest arterial routes and to accommodate future growth in the northern suburbs. Implementation will be monitored through regular reviews and coordination with local agencies to ensure timely delivery. The authority will coordinate with railway and municipal departments during construction to limit disruption. Authorities signalled that the scheme is expected to contribute to overall urban mobility and to support ongoing development in the Patia area.
