NHAI Opens Rs 10.25 billion Madurai Ring Road

The National Highways Authority of India has completed the four-laning of the Vadipatti–Thamaraipatti section of NH-744A, a 29.96 km stretch, and opened the corridor for traffic. The project cost is estimated at Rs 10,246.6 million (mn), about Rs 10.25 billion (bn). The corridor serves as a critical bypass linking parallel stretches of NH-44 and NH-38 and redirects heavy and long-distance commercial vehicles away from Madurai city. The new alignment is expected to provide direct connectivity to northern Madurai villages and reduce urban congestion.

The scheme incorporates extensive structural works including two flyovers, two vehicular overpasses, two vehicular underpasses, five light vehicular underpasses, four small vehicular underpasses and two pedestrian underpasses. The stretch also features four major bridges and 29 minor bridges together with a partial cloverleaf interchange to ease traffic distribution. A modern toll plaza has been established at Ilavankulam near Alanganallur to manage revenue and traffic flow. Service roads totalling 11.32 km have been constructed on both the Left-Hand Side (LHS) and Right-Hand Side (RHS) to cater to local commuting needs.

Eco-sensitive design elements include a dedicated wildlife overpass fitted with a noise barrier to facilitate undisturbed movement of fauna from the Waguthamalai reserve forest region. The corridor is equipped with pan-tilt-zoom cameras under the Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) to enable continuous monitoring of traffic and enforcement against unauthorised parking and highway incidents. These measures form part of an integrated approach to safety and environment preservation.

The project is projected to bolster the micro-region's economy by improving access to industrial estates and tourism hubs and by stimulating local business activity. Commuters are set to benefit from reduced travel times, lower vehicle operating costs and diminished fuel consumption while the city will experience relief from road stress and improvements in air quality. Overall, the development is expected to strengthen logistics efficiency and enhance the outer connectivity of Madurai.
