Chennai Metro Completes Ullagaram-Sholinganallur Precast Work

Chennai Metro Rail (CMRL) has completed casting all precast elements, including the final U-girder, for the Ullagaram-Sholinganallur stretch of Phase II Corridor 5. The completion marks a significant construction milestone for the elevated metro section and concludes the precast scope of the ECV-03 package.

The package involved casting 3,126 precast elements. These comprised 1,041 I-girders, 892 U-girders, 871 pier arm segments, 303 pier caps and 19 portal shells, according to information issued by CMRL on Tuesday.

With 892 U-girders cast, ECV-03 recorded the highest U-girder production among the packages being implemented under the Phase II project. The construction activity used 98,052 cubic metres of concrete, 18,550 t of reinforcement steel and 3,010 t of high-tensile strands.

The work was completed through coordinated efforts by CMRL, its general consultant AEON Consortium and the contractor HCC-KEC Consortium. The milestone was marked in the presence of CMRL Director (Projects) T. Archunan and officials representing the metro operator, consultant and contractor.

Following completion of the final U-girder, the project will proceed with erecting the remaining U-girders and constructing the entry and exit structures. CMRL said these activities are progressing as part of the wider effort to complete Chennai Metro Phase II on schedule. The latest milestone enables the project team to focus on the remaining structural and access-related works along the corridor.

The Ullagaram-Sholinganallur section is being developed as part of Corridor 5 in the second phase of the Chennai Metro expansion. The completion of casting provides the project with the full set of precast components required for the remaining erection activities in the ECV-03 package.
