L&T Metro awards Rs 7.4 bn contract to Thales

Larsen & Toubro Metro Rail (Hyderabad) awarded a a Rs 740-crore contract for signalling and communications to French group Thales. The amount will accrue to the €13-billion company over a five-year execution.

Eric Lenseigne, Vice-President, Thales India remarked that the firm was delighted to have secured the first communications project in India, this contract being the first of its kind in India.

The contract envisages development of a signalling system that would allow Hyderabad Metro to run metro trains at gap of as low as 90 seconds in peak hours.

The system is already in use in over 30 of the world’s largest city metro systems transporting 3 billion passengers each year. Thales, which already has a presence in India, with a staff of 1,250, plans to double the strength in the next two-three years. The company is also competing for installing the automatic fare collection system in Hyderabad Metro, which will soon be making an announcement in this regard.

Thales is also eyeing contracts in other signalling and automatic fare collection systems for metro projects in the country, such as Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Delhi Metro Phase-III.
