Officials mull unified transport authority

In order to develop an effective road transportation and traffic management system, local officials call for setting up a unified metropolitan transport authority in the Visakhapatnam.

Call for a unified metropolitan transport authority assumes significance in view of the expanding boundaries of the city and development of multiple modes of public transport.

The proposed authority would make the Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region (VMR) area and its surroundings well connected considering the rising demand for transportation infrastructure.

The state government set up a committee for the unified metropolitan transport authority for which the Principal Secretary of Municipal Administration and Urban development Department will act as Chairman.

Recently, the district officials have reportedly discussed the proposal at a preliminary meeting convened at VUDA Office. The meeting was attended by District Collector V Seshadri, City Police Commissioner B Sivadhar Reddy, GVMC Commissioner MV Satyanarayana, VUDA Vice-Chairman N Yuvaraj, GVMC Additional Commissioner M Janaki, VUDA Chief Urban Planner RJ Vidyullatha, and district Additional SP DN Kishore.
