Sonowal lays foundation stone for Inland Waterways Terminal in Dibrugarh

The foundation stone of the Inland Waterways Transport (IWT) terminal, which is to be developed at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh, Assam by the bank of the River Brahmaputra (National Waterways 2), was laid today by the Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush. The cost of developing the tourist-cum-cargo IWT terminal is estimated to be Rs 460.60 billion, and it is expected to be completed by February 2024. The completion of this terminal is anticipated to have a significant impact on revitalising inland waterways transportation in the region for both cargo and passenger movement, thereby facilitating the growth of trade and commerce.

During the event, Sonowal expressed, "It is a significant day for the people of Assam as we take steps towards revitalizing inland waterways transport in the region by enhancing the capital infrastructure at Bogibeel. The new jetty will help us achieve the vision outlined by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to enable waterways transportation as a transformative factor. We must acknowledge and utilise the immense potential of the 'Mahabahu Brahmaputra' in the most effective manner to ensure efficient development and progress without compromising on ecological or economic aspects. Considering Dibrugarh's historical significance as a hub of inland waterways in the past, I believe that this modern terminal at Bogibeel will act as a catalyst in restoring Dibrugarh's lost glory as a major commercial hub and become a harbinger of growth for upper Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland in the future."

The IWT terminal, which falls under the authority of the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI), the nodal agency for inland waterways of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways (MoPSW), will incorporate various modern features. The Indian Port Rail & Ropeway Construction is responsible for executing the development of the terminal. Notable features of the terminal include cargo and passenger berths, approach and internal roads, a transit shed, open storage area, truck parking area, and a passenger waiting area, among others. The development of the terminal will play a crucial role in the progress of upper Assam and neighbouring states like Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland, facilitating both cargo and passenger transportation. Additionally, it will boost eco-tourism and streamline the movement of EXIM cargo with lower transportation costs compared to other methods.
