Tamil Nadu Railway Projects Receive Rs. 7.5 bn Push

Tamil Nadu’s railway infrastructure received a major expansion with the commissioning of a new rail link, upgrades at five Amrit Bharat stations and three rail flyovers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the projects to the nation during his visit to the state on October 10, 2026. The combined investment is around Rs. 7.5 bn.

The largest project is the 23 km Karaikal-Peralam railway line, developed at a cost of more than Rs. 5.5 bn. The line connects Karaikal with the Mayiladuthurai-Tiruvarur rail corridor, providing an additional route for passenger and freight movement in the region. It also establishes rail access to Karaikal Port and is intended to support the movement of bulk commodities such as coal, fertilisers and food grains.

The new connection is expected to improve transport options for industries served by the port and could support journeys to regional destinations, including the Saneeswarar Temple at Thirunallar. The eventual benefits will depend on the passenger and freight services introduced on the route and the level of traffic handled after operations begin.

Ambasamudram, Palani, Namakkal, Paramakkudi and Vellore Cantonment stations have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The station works, costing more than Rs. 700 mn, include improvements to station buildings, platforms, waiting areas, parking facilities and passenger information systems. Accessibility features include ramps, lifts and accessible toilets at designated locations.

The three rail flyovers were built at a combined cost of more than Rs. 1.2 bn, primarily around Coimbatore and nearby areas. By separating train movements across different levels, the structures are designed to reduce operational conflicts, ease congestion and improve traffic flow near level crossings. Together, the projects combine passenger amenities, port connectivity and capacity improvements across Tamil Nadu’s railway network.
