India's port infrastructure is set to receive a boost from 2024, with the inauguration of facilities at Vizhinjam in Kerala and initiation of construction at Vadhavan in Maharashtra. Vizhinjam Port's initial phase, near completion, is poised to become India's premier mega trans-shipment container terminal, handling one million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) or 24 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). Currently, India's ports collectively handle 2,604.99 MTPA. Vadhavan Port under the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority, will be a vital deep draft facility to reduce logistics costs. With a projected investment of Rs.738.94 billion, it aims for a cargo handling capacity of around 300 MTPA by 2040.
