The Centre has permitted 21 greenfield airports in minor cities. A total of 11 greenfield airports are functioning till now. The latest among them is the Shivamogga airport in Karnataka. Since 2018, eight airports have been operational besides Shivamogga. The state government or the operator need to classify the site and get a viability study done for the airport. The government has also permitted site authorisation for creating three greenfield airports: Alwar in Rajasthan, Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and Singrauli in Madhya Pradesh. The accountability of the execution lies with the respective airport contractor as well as the state.

The construction of Noida International Airport, also known as Jewar airport, was in its final stages, and passenger services were expected to begin in October. The airport would be linked by six roads and a rapid rail-cum-metro, in addition to pod taxis.
