CWC Expands Digital Monitoring of Reservoir Storage Nationwide

The Central Water Commission (CWC) has detailed the enhanced digital framework used to monitor the live storage status of 166 major reservoirs across India. While telemetry-based systems were initially installed on 78 reservoirs, operational challenges with satellite technology led to wider adoption of the Reservoir Storage Monitoring System (RSMS), introduced in 2012. A new web-based version of the portal launched in April 2025, offering automated analytics and generating charts and tables for inclusion in the weekly reservoir bulletin.

As part of its non-structural flood management measures, CWC issues short-range forecasts with up to 24-hour lead time to states, along with seven-day advisory forecasts posted online. Inflow forecasts are also provided for designated reservoirs to support operational regulation. Flood forecasting is currently undertaken at 350 national stations
