Cement off-take slows down

According to the statistics of Cement Manufacturers Association, cement consumption showed a decline in the year-on-year growth this April. During the month, demand was up 8.6 per cent as against 13 per cent recorded in the corresponding month last year. Sales totalled 18.13 mn tonne compared to 16.7 mn tonne last year.

Last year, demand growth was largely supported by the pre-election spending on infrastructure and high growth scenario in the north, due to the Commonwealth Games. Even cement exports had doubled during the same month last year. Industry experts opined that demand would remain strong in volume terms but in percentages, it would not be as strong like last year.
