Scientists at IIT-Delhi, along with IIT-Bombay, IIT-Madras and an environmental NGO called Development Alternatives have developed a low cost cement that emits 20 per cent to 30 per cent less carbon than regular cement. For every tonne of cement produced, about 0.82 tonne of CO2 is emitted. IIT scientists have developed a variety of cement using just 40 per cent to 50 per cent clinker and have supplemented it with low-grade calcined clay and limestone, which researchers say are being wasted.
