Toshiba is eyeing 10 per cent market share in the premium category elevators in India within the next three years. Junichi Kyushima, Managing Director, Toshiba Johnson Elevators India Pvt Ltd, elaborates on the company's operations, its future plans and the industry in India.

What are the prospects for the elevators and escalators industry? Is demand growing? Are buyers becoming more brand conscious?
India being the second largest market after China, for elevators and escalators in the world, has enormous prospects. With the country's GDP growing at approximately 8 per cent per annum, the demand for elevators and escalators is growing steadily at an approximate CAGR of 10~12 per cent. Buyers are becoming brand conscious and recognising the need for high quality and safe vertical transportation systems, especially in the high-rise segment.

Which products are most in demand and who are the leading takers? Are you seeing demand from any new segments?
The residential segment still constitutes around 80 per cent of the market demand. The leading takers shall be Lodha's, Hiranandani's and Raheja's in the Mumbai market and Prestige, Sobha, Brigade Group and Embassy in the south India market. Also, luxury villas/residences with a potentially growing need of home elevators can be seen as an emerging segment.

Have you recently introduced any new products to the market?
In view of the global "Go Green" initiative, we plan to launch two green products for the Indian market by April 2013. These shall serve the mid and mid high-rise segment of the Indian market. They shall offer both compact machine room type as well as machine room less type solutions.

What after-sales or maintenance services do you provide?
Toshiba has numerous maintenance experiences for apartment buildings, commercial building to high-rise buildings globally. Furthermore, our company holds the Guinness world record for installing the fastest elevator in the world (completed in 2004). These maintenance experiences are fully supported by our headquarters to the Indian market.

Any latest technologies or designs introduced by the company - considering the Indian requirement or to match international designs?
We offer finest quality products for high-speed elevators and premium segment elevators shipped from various factories around the globe. In the near future, we plan to focus on customising our products for Indian markets. Our latest product SPACEL-III and ELCOSMO-III incorporates latest technologies to save both energy consumption and offers environmentally conscious products.

How do you view the future for the elevators and escalators market in India?
According to our estimates, around 500,000 elevators and escalators will be installed globally in the year 2013. Within those, India will constitute 10 per cent (50,000 units) of the world's demand. We are planning to capture 1,000 units per year in all segments and minimum 10 per cent in the premium segment.

We aim to fulfil these demands and offer more safe, high-quality and comfortable products and service for the Indian market.

Any case study that you would like to share with us with respect to the project and the elevator/escalator designed for it?

We entered into the Guinness book of world records, for the fastest elevator in Taipei Financial Center 1010 mpm in 2004. We still hold this record.
We are the first manufacturer to introduce Inverter controlled gearless elevator.
First to introduce Machine Room Less elevators in Japan
We installed the largest capacity elevator (40 persons) travelling at a maximum speed of 600 mpm, fastest in Japan, and a travel distance of 464.4 m installed in Tokyo Sky Tree (New Tokyo Communication Tower), Japan.
Pioneer in double decker elevator technology (installed 36 elevators in a single project)
We've introduced Outdoor type observation elevator in Japan, travelling at 360 mpm. This is also the world's fastest outdoor type elevator.
