Govt mandates use of local alternative materials for roads

The Centre has made use of locally-available alternative materials such as industrial waste, as substitute to bitumen for laying one in every 10-km roads, mandatory. Materials such as blast furnace slag, rubble and municipal solid waste in road construction will help reduce dependence on scarce natural resources and recycle waste and ascertain durability of different materials so that their use can be scaled up.
